Grimes Concedes Without Conceding or Even Mentioning McConnell
Alison Lundergan Grimes gave what MSNBC host Chris Matthews called not “your usual concession speech” last night. Grimes lost badly to presumptive Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell after a long-shot bid in Kentucky earned her the dubious distinction of running one of the year’s worst campaign ads. She spent several minutes thanking everyone who supported her and waxing eloquent about how generally awesome she was. But as Matthews observed, she didn’t concede. “Usually you congratulate the winner,” he said. “You say something gracious. You move on. You unify the state to some extent. It was a partisan speech.” She even neglected to mention McConnell’s name at all. Referencing her refusal to say she voted for Obama, Matthews added, “She was unable to say who won the election, either.”
