Giuliani: Police Go Where the Crime Is
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani got in a shouting match with Georgetown professor Michael Eric Dyson on MSNBC over when a discussion about the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, and policing practices across the country. Giuliani pointed out that “93% of blacks are killed by other blacks,” and a white person murdering a black person, or a black person murdering a white person, is rare. Dyson fired back saying, “Black people who kill black people go to jail. White people who are policemen who kill black people do not go to jail.” During the argument, Giuliani said, “White police officers wouldn’t be there if you weren’t killing each other.” While Giuliani’s comments were not polished, he was right: The disproportionate rates of crime in black communities trigger a surge of law enforcement officers – some of whom are white.
