DHS Sec Says GOP Took Obama Out of Context on Amnesty
DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson says Republicans took Barack Obama out of context when quoting his statements about his inability to legally enact amnesty through executive order. Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX) asked Johnson in a hearing Tuesday, “The president said over 20 times that he did not have the legal authority to take this executive action, and that this is not how democracy works. Do you agree with that prior statement?” Johnson declared that he’d want to “see the full context” of those remarks. So Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) played a video of one of the president’s declarations. Johnson smugly replied, “Listen, I’ve been a lawyer 30 years. Somebody plays me an eight-word excerpt from a broader speech, I know it to be suspicious. Okay? That was very nice.” Johnson’s dodge was so lame it prompted laughter from those in the hearing room.
