The Obstructionists: Dems Threaten DHS Funding
Congressional politics have fallen so low that it is the preferred political strategy of the minority party to threaten shuttering portions of the government. Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) admitted a stalemate. Despite his willingness to entertain amendments from all sides, Democrat senators have filibustered the bill funding the Department of Homeland Security and rolling back Barack Obama’s executive amnesty. McConnell told reporters, “It’s clear we can’t get on the bill. We can’t offer amendments to the bill. And I think it would be pretty safe to say we’re stuck because of Democratic obstruction on the Senate side.” This impasse has created friction between House and Senate Republicans, as GOP senators are suggesting that the House create a new DHS spending bill that will pass the gridlocked Senate. However, Republicans agree: If DHS shuts down and there is a terrorist attack that claims the lives of Americans, the blood will be on the hands of Democrats. The only remaining question is if the rest of the country will see that connection.
