Obama’s Politically Convenient Shift on Russia
U.S. intelligence says Russia hacked DNC and Clinton emails. That helps Clinton.
The U.S. Intelligence Community (USIC) along with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Friday that they were “confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of emails from U.S. persons and institutions, including from U.S. political organizations.” They charged that “the Russians have used similar tactics and techniques across Europe and Eurasia,” and that “only Russia’s senior-most officials could have authorized these activities.” While it has long been rumored that Russians masterminded the politically damaging information leaked from the DNC hacked emails and Hillary Clinton’s personal server, the connection was never officially confirmed by the government until Friday.
Flash back to 2012 and see that Obama’s views on Russia seemed to have changed significantly. Recall Obama’s too-clever zinger against Mitt Romney for his views on Russia being the U.S. biggest geopolitical foe. “The 1980’s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years,” mocked Obama. It now seems that Obama’s naïve foreign policy ideology is finally facing the reality of an ever-growing Russian threat. And just in time to be politically expedient for Hillary Clinton and her continued charge that Donald Trump is somehow in cahoots with Russia to unduly influence the election. The irony is that even the suggestion of Russia attempting to influence the election in Trump’s favor only serves Clinton. The reality is that Moscow would love a third Obama term.
