Michigan’s All-Too-Avoidable COVID Spike

By having insisted on draconian lockdowns, the state’s governor, Gretchen Whitmer, is now reaping what she’s sown.

Michigan’s inept Democrat governor has done it again. Having exercised the nation’s toughest COVID-19 lockdown policies during the past year, she prevented the state’s 10 million residents from moving toward herd immunity. And now? The state is seeing a massive spike in coronavirus cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

But if you’re inclined to criticize the notoriously thin-skinned governor, do be careful. Otherwise you might be accused of hating women. As The Daily Wire’s Jon Brown reports, “Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Sunday discerned a ‘layer of misogyny’ in the threats and criticisms leveled against her and female members of her administration.”

“Appearing Sunday on ‘Face the Nation,’ Whitmer responded to a clip … of Michigan GOP Chairman Ron Weiser recently calling Whitmer, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson ‘three witches’ who needed to be burned at the stake politically.”

Whitmer, who’s leadership traits are unlikely to make anyone forget Margaret Thatcher, was then asked about state Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey’s recent comment that the Michigan GOP had “spanked” her on the budget, on appointments, and on other things. It’s fairly clear from the context that the entire GOP delegation didn’t literally take turns spanking the governor, but Shirkey was nonetheless accused of having sexualized Whitmer.

When reminded that both Weiser and Shirkey had apologized, all Whitmer could do was trot out the victim card.

“Well, when you say that they’ve apologized,” said Michigan’s Iron Lady, “I don’t know to whom they’ve apologized because I haven’t heard from them. I can tell you this, though, that sadly, in this moment, there have been a lot of death threats. We know that there was a plot to kidnap and kill me; death threats against me and my family. It’s different in what I’m confronting than what some of my male counterparts are. So, yes, I do think that there is a layer of misogyny here that every woman in leadership has been confronting and dealing with to some extent.”

But Whitmer doesn’t have time to focus on all that, or to go punch-for-punch with her Republican adversaries. Just ask her. She’ll tell you. Right after she’s done telling you about all the death threats that she so resolutely faces.

Instead, Whitmer wants her state’s residents to focus on those things, which, she hopes, will keep them from focusing on the important stuff — like the fact that, as Stacey Lennox at PJ Media reports, “COVID-19 cases have started spiking in Michigan, which currently has the highest number of positive tests per 100,000 in the nation. The state’s seven-day average is 515 per 100,000. The next closest state is New Jersey, with 300.” (Yep, New Jersey — another lockdown state under authoritarian Democrat rule.)

Never fear, though. CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky has just the prescription for Michigan: “The answer to that,” she says, “is to really close things down, to go back to our basics, to go back to where we were last spring, last summer, and to shut things down, to flatten the curve, to decrease contact with one another to test to the extent that we have available, to contact trace.”

As Lennox replies, “Residents of Michigan will be thrilled to hear ‘flatten the curve’ again. … It is like none of our public health experts have realized the curve only stays flat until people start emerging from their homes. They don’t seem to correlate a surge in positive COVID-19 tests with states that implemented the strictest lockdowns.”

Whoa. There’s a correlation between strict lockdowns and COVID-19 surges? Who knew?
