IRS Continues Foot Dragging

More documents found regarding the Tea Party targeting scandal.

On Wednesday, IRS officials sat before the House Committee on Government Oversight and Reform and were questioned repeatedly on a couple of fronts. One of the big concerns and questions voiced by the committee was regarding the IRS’s refusal to comply with suggested reforms due to the problem of tax return fraud. In 2015, CNBC reported that total tax-return fraud was estimated to be $21 billion. That total was up significantly from two years prior when the total amounted to $6.5 billion, still a large number. Sounding like a drug addict who refuses to face reality, the IRS responded that it did not believe the fraud problem to be wide spread or significant enough to justify applying the Government Accountability Office’s (GOA) recommended reforms.

On the second front, we learned that the IRS has found 7,000 more documents related to the Tea Party targeting scandal, but of course no timeline has been set for when the documents will be released. The revelation came about due to a lawsuit brought by Judicial Watch in which it sought documents related to the scandal based on a FIOA request. Upon hearing the admission from the IRS, Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said, “Our attorneys knew that there were more records to be searched but the Obama IRS ignored this issue for years.”

The question remains: Why has Donald Trump not yet acted on the IRS? Specifically, why has he not yet fired IRS commissioner John Koskinen? He certainly has plenty of cause, and support from Republicans. In fact, this revelation may trigger yet another attempt by House Republicans to impeach Koskinen. Hopefully this time it gets done. It’s high time the corruption within the IRS is cleaned up.
