Should He Stay or Should He Go?

Democrats and their Leftmedia allies are not all on the same page regarding Joe Biden’s future.

Dr. Jill Biden has for the third time graced the cover of Vogue magazine this morning in a story about “what’s at stake in 2024.” Melania Trump, a supermodel, was conspicuously left off of magazine covers — specifically Vogue — while she was first lady, but whatever. Elsewhere, Jill said that Joe Biden, the dementia-ridden man we watched flame out in the debate Thursday night, is “the only man for the job.”

She means that she likes playing Edith Wilson, the first lady who ran the White House after her husband had a debilitating stroke. Jill Biden is guilty of elder abuse, plain and simple.

Biden’s disastrous debate performance pulled the mask off the Left’s effort to prop him up. The same journalists gaslighting everyone early in June couldn’t cheap fake themselves out of acknowledging what we all saw with our own eyes on live TV. Now, the question for Democrats is what to do about it. We’ll explore that more in-depth another day, but for now, here are some big observations on the post-debate cleanup on Aisle 46.

Leftmedia

On Friday, the media word of the day was “PANIC.” That was literally the only word on a Time magazine cover story.

Four major newspaper editorial boards called for Biden to step aside, including the unofficial paper of the DNC, The New York Times. While “Mr. Biden has been an admirable president,” the Times editors say, beating Donald Trump is too important, and they fear Biden can’t do it. The others were The Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. (The Philadelphia Inquirer, meanwhile, called for Trump to step aside.) Numerous other left-wing pundits called for Biden to exit stage left.

Bill O'Reilly says, “The decision has been made that the President will quit the campaign.” Our Mark Alexander has been saying that since October 2022.

Democrats

At least for now, though, Democrats are stubbornly sticking with him. The Biden family and Barack Obama sought to put to rest any idea that Biden’s going anywhere. It started right after the debate with Jill Biden’s bizarre screechy comments about Biden doing “such a great job.” The next day, the two hit the campaign trail in North Carolina, where she ran interference for him, making wild claims about his “character” and “strength” while he stared off into space, slack-jawed and mentally absent.

Biden then took the stage and enjoyed himself while the crowd chanted “Lock him up” about Trump. I’m old enough to remember Thursday night’s debate, when talking about retribution was frowned upon.

He defended himself with uninspiring admissions and utter fiction before yelling the conclusion: “I know I’m not a young man. I don’t walk as easily as I used to. I don’t talk as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to, but I know what I do know: I know how to tell the truth. I know right from wrong. And I know how to do this job, I know how to get things done. And I know what millions of Americans know: When you get knocked down, you get back up.”

Obama also offered support — at least in public. Behind closed doors, he’s probably trying to convince Biden to step aside. “Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know,” said Obama. He then falsely asserted that Biden is “someone who tells the truth” and “knows right from wrong” and is the best man for the job.

Over the weekend, the Biden family retreated to Camp David to discuss Biden’s future. According to The New York Times, “Mr. Biden huddled with his wife, children and grandchildren at Camp David while he tried to figure out how to tamp down Democratic anxiety.” Just not that pesky seventh grandchild the Bidens have only grudgingly acknowledged once.

In any case, the Biden family pushed Joe to stay in the race. For Jill, it’s about clinging to power. But the Times says Hunter Biden was “one of the strongest voices imploring Mr. Biden to resist pressure to drop out.” His best-case scenario would be a full pardon from Dad on the way out of the White House, so whatever it takes to make that happen — and the sooner, the better.

Politico reports that the Biden family blames the president’s advisers for his debate collapse. That’s absurd, of course, but the infighting is at least amusing.

Indeed, the competing narratives are still shaking out. According to Axios, which relayed the thoughts of White House insiders, there are really two Joe Bidens — and the debate version just happened to be the bad one. “From 10am to 4pm, Biden is dependably engaged,” Axios reports, “and many of his public events in front of cameras are held within those hours.”

The job of the president lasts longer than six hours a day. Remember Hillary Clinton talking about that 3 a.m. phone call? Forget 10, four, and three. The number we should be talking about is 25 — as in the 25th Amendment.

Of course, Kamala Harris remains Biden’s 25th Amendment insurance. No one wants to give the unliked and uninspiring vice president the nomination or the presidency — least of all Jill Biden.

Said one White House insider, “The only person who has ultimate influence with him is the first lady. If she decides there should be a change of course, there will be a change of course.” Until then, she’ll help him down the stairs, cheer him on, and, if necessary, feed him Jell-O and push his wheelchair.
