Trump Suspends Immigration During China Virus Crisis
Predictably the president’s entirely reasonable decision has been blasted as ‘xenophobic’ by the Left.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending all immigration to the U.S. as the nation continues to struggle with the China Virus crisis. The immigration suspension will last 60 days and could be extended longer depending on where the country stands regarding the pandemic. Trump argued that it’s primarily about jobs. “We have a solemn duty to make sure these unemployed Americans regain their jobs and their livelihoods. Therefore, in order to protect American workers, I will be issuing a temporary suspension of immigration into the United States,” Trump stated. “By pausing immigration, we’ll help put unemployed Americans first in line for jobs as America reopens.”
He emphasized, “We must first take care of the American worker. This pause will be in effect for 60 days, after which the need for any extension or modification will be evaluated.” And indeed, with tens of millions of American currently forced out of work by government orders and waiting on those same state officials to lift restrictions so they can get back to work, it’s complete reasonable to suspend bringing more people into the country to compete for those jobs. “It would be wrong and unjust for Americans laid off by the virus to be replaced with new immigrant labor flown in from abroad,” argued the president. “We must first take care of the American worker.”
Predictably, Leftmedia pundits blasted Trump’s order as “xenophobic” or accused Trump of, as ABC News’s Cecilia Vega put it, “using the virus to justify increased restrictions on immigration.” Members of the Leftmedia made the same charges back when Trump restricted travel from China, only to later admit that his decision was justified. But then they blasted him for addressing the pandemic threat too little, too late. Nothing is good enough for the Left.
Fortunately, the vast majority of Americans see Trump’s decision as completely sensible given the circumstances. The Washington Examiner reports, “A total of 83%, or 5 in 6 people, say they favor a moratorium on immigration through the southwest border amid the pandemic, a new Harvard/Harris poll found. That figure includes 75% of Mexican Americans and 93% of Republican voters.” Once again, the Leftmedia reveals that its globalist agenda more often than not stands in direct opposition to what is good for Americans.
