When All You Have Is a Nazi Hammer…
A longtime CNN “journalist” becomes the latest leftist to disgrace herself with an odious comparison.
Last week, another in a long line of over-the-hill media half-wits, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, compared President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler. Monday, under duress, she finally trotted out a pseudo-apology.
Her attack was, if nothing else, uninspiring and unoriginal. And it makes us wonder: With their Godwin’s Law losing streak now in the triple digits, are those on the Left simply incapable of engaging in a reasonable discussion about Trump?
“This week, 82 years ago,” she ominously intoned, “Kristallnacht happened. It was the Nazis’ warning shot across the bow of our human civilization that led to genocide against a whole identity and in that tower of burning books, it led to an attack on fact, knowledge, history, and truth. After four years of a modern-day assault on those same values by Donald Trump, the Biden-Harris team pledges a return to norms, including the truth. And every day, Joe Biden makes presidential announcements about good governance and the health and security of the American people, while the great brooding figure of his defeated opponent rages, conducting purges of perceived enemies and preventing a transition.”
Political strategist Arthur Schwartz put it succinctly: “Here we see CNN’s Christiane Amanpour pissing on the graves of the 6,000,000 Jews murdered by the Nazis. CNN, you’re an absolute disgrace.”
Who can argue with that assessment? As we noted earlier, Amanpour was forced to apologize. In fact, she merely equivocated, explaining that her true fault was being overzealously righteous.
“I observed the 82nd anniversary of Kristallnacht. … I also noted President Trump’s attacks on history, facts, knowledge, and truth,” she said. “I should not have juxtaposed the two thoughts. Hitler and his evils stand alone, of course, in history. I regret any pain my statement may have caused. My point was to say how democracy can potentially slip away, and how we must always zealously guard our democratic values.”
Weak sauce. She regrets “any pain” she may have caused, but, to no one’s surprise, she can’t bring herself to say the words I’m sorry.
Back in 2017, when a few dead-enders were still taking New York Times columnist Charles Blow seriously, National Review’s Kyle Smith put them out of their misery. Blow had just joined the growing ranks of the Trump-is-like-Hitler crowd, and Smith held him up to full-on ridicule.
“I was gobsmacked,” he wrote. “My mind reeled. I can’t emphasize enough how fresh, how novel, how utterly without precedent this Hitler-Trump comparison is. … Furthermore, to drop this knowledge on the public was to Blow a duty of such moment that it drove him to carry out a godlike act of slamming his truth-boot down through the firmament upon our benighted planet.”
Smith then ran the numbers, which — lo and behold — still hold up after nearly an entire Trump term: Hitler murdered 11 million; Trump has murdered no one. Hitler invaded the sovereign states of Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Free State of Danzig, Denmark, France, Guernsey, Hungary, Italy, Jersey, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, San Marino, the Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia; Trump has invaded no sovereign states. Hitler lied about Jews being the source of Germany’s misery; Trump lied about ratings for “The Apprentice,” his Electoral College victory being the biggest since Ronald Reagan’s, and whether anyone else had been on the cover of Time more than he.
You get the idea. The Trump-Hitler comparison long ago became childish, idiotic, and disgraceful, and CNN’s Amanpour is now its poster child. The only question, then, is the same as it ever was: How long before the next leftist dunderhead takes her place?
James Clyburn, come on down.
