Opening the Border to Protect It?
Biden struggled to read a speech about immigration in which he promised to fix it by making it far worse.
As Democrats pivoted on COVID for political gain, it seems they’re ready to at least appear to pivot on immigration. Unfortunately, about two hours after Joe Biden gave a factually challenged and at times incoherent speech pretending to care about the border yesterday at the White House, U.S. Customs and Border Protection revealed that a Border Patrol agent had been shot multiple times by a smuggler. The agent was saved by his body armor and six people were soon arrested, but the attack illustrates quite clearly the intentional invasion Biden has enabled all while he’s trying to tell us he’s got everything under control.
The White House didn’t issue a statement on the assaulted agent, which is quite a contrast to the time Biden was so quick to denounce BP agents before he even knew the facts about that phony “whipping” incident.
The giveaway that yesterday’s speech was all political theater is that Biden began by blaming Republicans. “On my first day in office,” he insisted, “I sent Congress a comprehensive piece of legislation that would completely overhaul what has been a broken immigration system for a long time.” But, he complained, “congressional Republicans have refused to consider my comprehensive plan.” Later, he said, “We need more resources to secure the border,” but “extreme Republicans have said no.” He argued that this is all “because our politics has been so divisive … it clouds the picture.”
Pure chutzpah.
Remember that, before the 2020 election, Biden publicly called on people in Central and South America to “surge” to the border. Is it any wonder between his pronouncements and policies that more than five million migrants have done exactly that?
Biden didn’t mention that also on day one of his presidency he immediately set about to undo everything Trump did to secure the border. Biden issued nearly 90 executive orders, doing this in his first year alone. He also lied. The “resources” he wants are not to secure the border but are primarily to process illegal aliens and disperse them into the country more quickly. More about that in a moment.
As for division, Democrats have done a 180 on immigration, at least rhetorically. Democrats used to speak in favor of border security. Not anymore. They uniformly stood against Donald Trump’s immigration plans out of pure spite and then have the nerve to lecture about political divisions.
Biden is correct that our system has been broken for a long time, though it’s thanks to the decades Democrats have spent undermining Rule of Law on the border. No, there aren’t “enough asylum officers or personnel to determine whether people qualify for asylum.” But that’s because they keep announcing — as Biden did in this speech — that practically anyone and everyone has a “human right” to come here and claim asylum. He even likened today’s migrants to Jews fleeing the Holocaust.
To the point of processing more aliens, part of his “plan” for fixing the border is to announce an app so migrants can claim asylum even more easily. He also says he’ll expand the number of refugee visas from the socialist paradise nations of Venezuela, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Cuba to 30,000. Each month.
First of all, simply making an even bigger surge of migrants “legal” most certainly doesn’t fix the problem. Furthermore, this is coming from the guy who constantly griped about Trump’s supposed executive overreach on the subject. Yet now he says Republicans have left him “with only one choice: to act on my own.”
Biden also did what Democrats and a few too many Republicans love to do, which is to hide behind calls for “comprehensive” reform. As he put it yesterday, the work at the border “will not be done unless and until the Congress enacts and funds a more comprehensive immigration plan that I proposed on day one.” How about enforcing existing law?
Maybe it’ll fix everything when, for the first time in his presidency, he visits the border in El Paso this Sunday. (The actual big news is that he won’t be on vacation in Delaware.) Then again, El Paso is the same place “border czar” Kamala Harris visited in 2021, and it’s not where the action is. Not even close. “President Harris,” as Biden called her yet again, knows this, as do Biden’s handlers.
Still, here’s hoping Biden poses with an ice cream cone near a fence, or maybe with his head in his hands weeping like drama queen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did on her 2019 visit to the border. Then at least the visit would be good for a few laughs.
In all seriousness, Biden’s dereliction on the border is an actual impeachable offense. His lawlessness is a disgrace and threat to our nation, an offense to the office he holds, and a violation of his oath to “support and defend” our Constitution. He should be removed from office for it.
