No Sanctuary for Democrats
Lori Lightfoot is eating humble pie and asking for reprieve from Texas migrant busing.
Lori Lightfoot only has 12 more days as mayor of Chicago before newcomer Brandon Johnson takes over on May 15. How does she choose to spend her last few days? Complaining to Texas Governor Greg Abbott about his busing of illegal immigrants to her “sanctuary city.”
Recall that she, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, and others declared that their cities would be sanctuaries for migrants. They did this as an act of political theater to stand up to President Donald Trump and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Under President Joe Biden, the southern border has become a sieve, and Texas is taking the brunt of the illegals crossing the border. That means towns, law enforcement, communities, and taxes are being sacrificed for the support and well-being of these millions of illegals.
Governor Abbott decided that enough was enough. If Democrat mayors were sincere about their sanctuary cities, he was going to give them what they were asking for while relieving the pressure on his own state.
Starting in April of last year, Abbott started busing illegals first to DC and then to other cities like Chicago and New York. As our Douglas Andrews remarked at the time: “At approximately 20 immigrants per busload, he’s bailing water from the Titanic with a soupspoon. At least, though, he’s giving [Democrat] denizens a taste of their own bad medicine.”
Fast-forward a year and Lori Lightfoot got herself ousted from her mayoral seat. This influx of migrants is not even the biggest black mark against her tenure as mayor of the Windy City, but her ill-advised claim that Chicago was a “sanctuary city” is now shown for what it really was: Democrat grandstanding. She made her bed and now must lie in it. In her failed reelection campaign, she actually bragged about how she refused to cooperate with ICE, so clearly she hasn’t learned much since then, and soon it won’t be her problem. Now that she is getting a taste of what cities in Texas have to go through every day, she is deeply regretting it.
In a letter to Abbott, Lightfoot wrote: “We simply have no more shelters, spaces, or resources. Though I am sympathetic to the significant challenges that border cities face, this situation is completely untenable.”
She mentioned that Chicago had been housing and caring for 8,000 migrants since Abbott started sending buses to her sanctuary city.
To put this in perspective, El Paso, Texas, is bracing for the end of Title 42 and has already declared a state of emergency. According to the El Paso Times, “Border Patrol was seeing 1,300 migrants a day in its El Paso Sector.” Lightfoot’s 8,000 is a drop in the bucket by comparison.
On a ridiculous side note, New York City Mayor Eric Adams also chimed in, claiming Abbott’s busing is racist against black-run cities. He said: “Not only is this behavior morally bankrupt and devoid of any concern for the well-being of asylum seekers, but it is also impossible to ignore the fact that Abbott is now targeting five cities run by Black mayors. Put plainly, Abbott is using this crisis to hurt Black-run cities.” The common thread, Mayor Adams, is that Democrat-run cities have claimed to be welcoming to asylum seekers and are run by so-called progressives who up until now haven’t had to face the consequences of their own border policies.
Abbott responded to Lightfoot’s letter by saying:
If you truly want to “work together to find a real solution” to this border crisis gripping our nation, you must call on the Biden Administration to do its job by securing our border, repelling the illegal immigrants flooding into our communities, classifying the Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, and intercepting the deadly fentanyl that is endangering our country. You are right that “this situation is completely untenable,” but this is not a Texas problem — this is a problem for the entire United States of America. Texas began busing migrants to sanctuary cities such as your “Welcoming City,” along with Washington, D.C., New York City, and Philadelphia, to provide much-needed relief to our overrun border communities. Until President Biden secures the border to stop the inflow of mass migration, Texas will continue this necessary program.
His sentiments are exactly correct. The invasion of migrants is untenable for everyone. This humanitarian crisis is entirely Biden’s fault, and it is his job to fix it. It’s especially important that progressive Democrats who foolishly champion these policies face the music.
