Au Revoir, Trudeau
The Canadian prime minister announced his resignation after months of sinking polling numbers and a cratering economy.
Justin Trudeau is out as Canada’s prime minister. After weeks of building pressure — thanks to a tanking economy reflected in his sinking polling numbers that dropped to an abysmal 28% approval rating and led to members of his own government jumping ship — it was just a matter of time before the gig was up.
In announcing his resignation, Trudeau said his only regret was … not having ranked-choice voting: “Well, probably many regrets that I will think of, but I do wish we’d been able to change the way we elect our governments in this country so that people could simply choose a second choice, or a third choice on the same ballot.” Really? No regrets for how his socialist policies have taken his country down a road to economic ruin? No regrets for how his countrymen’s civil liberties have been shredded in the name of woke morality?
Apparently, Trudeau is most bummed by the fact that Canada’s democratic electoral system of government prevents him from continuing to reign as a two-bit dictator.
The honest and most introspective questions regarding Trudeau’s actual record and impact upon Canada cannot be for him to assess fairly. That will be for honest historians who don’t have a ridiculous penchant for the failure that socialism always produces. Indeed, that is the one “commodity” that socialism always produces: economic failure.
Thanks in part to Trudeau’s climate alarmist policies, Canada’s fiscal deficit has ballooned to $61.9 billion — almost $22 billion more than the projected deficit of $40 billion in April. Given this situation, Donald Trump’s threat of raising a 25% tariff against Canadian goods effectively broke Trudeau’s government.
It certainly didn’t help Trudeau when Trump trolled that the country could join the U.S. and become the 51st state as a solution for Canada’s economic woes. In fact, he did it again after Trudeau resigned, writing on social media: “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned. If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”
That seems less of a joke each time he says it.
In any case, worse than the negative economic impact of socialism is its negative impact on individual freedom and liberty. While Trudeau tried to put a smiley face on socialism, his response to the COVID pandemic displayed the inherent tyrannical instincts in every socialist leader. Indeed, this was on full display in 2022 during the truckers’ “Freedom Convoy.” The truckers protesting Trudeau’s draconian COVID mandates saw their bank accounts frozen, their insurance canceled, and a host of other intimidation tactics.
Trudeau refused to meet with the protesters and listen to their legitimate complaints. Instead, he became tyrannical, reinforcing the reality that socialist elites in government value their power above the welfare of the nation and the civil rights of the people.
Trudeau established the reality that modern-day socialists are the same as the old socialists.
Now, Trudeau, who has led the Liberal Party since 2013 and been prime minister since 2015, will soon leave his country in worse shape than when he rose to power. That’s true economically and, more importantly, societally. Trudeau has not only left his own party in shambles but also left a huge mess for the Conservative Party to clean up. That sounds a lot like Joe Biden and the Democrats.
