Swalwell Isn’t Out of the Woods Yet

Just when former Congressman Eric Swalwell thought things couldn’t get any worse, the FBI stopped him at the airport and seized his phone.

“We don’t comment on the existence of investigations or lack thereof,” said a Justice Department spokesperson. The FBI had just seized an iPhone and laptop from former Representative Eric Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport and then searched his DC home the following day. The California Democrat was once a rising star in the party. Not anymore.

And as far as Justice Department officials remaining mum, someone get James Comey on the line.

For Swalwell, some quick background is in order.

In 2020, we learned that Swalwell had a sordid affair with a Chinese spy named Fang Fang. It’s troubling enough that an elected congressman would be sleeping with a ChiCom agent, but Swalwell held a seat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, making the breach even more serious.

That’s why, in 2023, then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy removed Swalwell from the Intel Committee, along with Russia collusion hoaxster Adam Schiff.

Fast-forward a couple more years, and Swalwell decided that it was time he ran for California governor. For a while, he was the frontrunner, and it appeared he would fail upwards. Then the knives came out. Swalwell was accused of sexual harassment and assault. He tried to stick it out, but eventually he suspended his campaign and resigned from Congress in April.

His fellow Democrats had covered for him long enough.

Well, just when Swalwell thought he’d hit rock bottom, the FBI showed up at the airport to take his stuff. The investigation is reportedly about those accusations of sexual assault. “He raped me, and he choked me,” one of his five accusers told the San Francisco Chronicle. “While he was choking me, I lost consciousness, and I thought I died. I did not consent to any sexual activity.”

That must have been one of the “mistakes in judgment” he lamented in his resignation statement. Still, his attorney says he “categorically and unequivocally denies each and every allegation of sexual misconduct and assault that has been leveled against him.”

Allegations are not proof. Ask Brett Kavanaugh. And FBI raids can be as much for show as evidence. Ask Donald Trump.

Nevertheless, Swalwell lacks character, and there seems to be enough evidence against him — unless he wiped those devices with a cloth or something (hat tip: Hillary Clinton).

Meanwhile, the New York Post reports, “A three-year FBI probe into then-Rep. Eric Swalwell determined suspected Chinese spy Fang Fang helped solicit illegal campaign donations — but the investigation was dropped for ‘national security reasons,’ according to bureau files declassified by the White House Monday.”

Now that Swalwell is out of office, that probe may have resumed.

So what’s next for the Bay Area district Swalwell represented? Surely, voters there will demand things go in a better direction, right?

Right?

Just yesterday, officials in California’s 14th congressional district finished counting votes after only two days — great work, everyone! Reporting on that special election to replace Swalwell, The New York Times writes, “Aisha Wahab, a progressive Democratic state senator, defeated Melissa Hernandez, a moderate Democrat.”

Whenever the Times admits a Democrat is “progressive” instead of the misnomer “moderate,” you know you’re in for some crazy left-wing policy positions. Wahab is not a member of the rising Democratic Socialists of America, but she is a Muslim Afghan American who believes that Israel is perpetrating “genocide” against the Palestinians.

In some corners of the internet, folks worry about the supposed power and influence of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Yet AIPAC spent heavily to defeat Wahab, for obvious reasons, and failed. For now anyway — Wahab and Hernandez will face off in a rematch in November.

Maybe both of them can steer clear of Chinese spies and the FBI.
